Chapter 14

T-81 Days

London hung up the phone and spun her chair around. “Biggest sale yet!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air and startling the dogs who had been snoozing in the corner. “Beat that, CJ,” she snickered. And the best part? The college baseball team didn’t want their order until early March, so APAWEA could make it in Haven and not in Georgia.

Alex was too busy to talk during the day, which is why they talked at night, but she had to share the great news now. She picked up her phone to text him, and got all gooey as she remembered last night’s talk, and that irritated the heck out of her. London Banks didn’t do gooey. Not even when the man’s voice sent lovely shivers up her spine as he whispered sweet nothings.

When they talked, Alex shared his concerns about training and how the other team wannabes performed, and London listened. If there was a problem at work, she emailed him and vice versa. She wanted their calls to be personal. Complaining to him about her unanticipated expanded role hadn’t done her any good, so she’d stopped complaining. Suck it up, buttercup, she thought.

But the job expansion had been interesting. For someone who proclaimed to not really like people, she’d enjoyed building a team. Neil was great, and with Croix’s help, they were getting a good handle on what information they needed to capture to run the business effectively. Their three-member production crew would start after Thanksgiving.

So far, everyone loved having Bella and Baxter around. Of course, it helped that ‘must like dogs’ had been in all the employment ads, and shy Bella had met all the finalists for a final sniff test.

Who would have thought London Banks, a self-employed marketing whiz, could lead a small team and manage everything? Some things better than others, she admitted. But, hey, I can’t be great at everything, she thought as her phone vibrated in her hand. Alex’s happy avatar smiled at her.

“How’s the boss?” she greeted him. It was still working hours in Haven, and if this was a social call, she needed to nip it in the bud.

“Pissed.”

“What’s wrong?” London sat straighter in her chair.

“The Eagles’ baseball order.”

“Great, right? Our biggest sale.”

“No. Not great. You shouldn’t have given them such a hearty discount. Their athletic department has deep pockets. They could have paid full price.”

“How was I supposed to know that? And why did Neil and I and Croix spend so much time cost accounting the pants to figure out quantity discounts if you weren’t planning to offer it?” London asked.

“CJ knew.”

“CJ has been as useful as a teat on a boar. Every time I call him, he agrees with whatever I say, or he forwards emails for me to follow up on, which is how the baseball team landed in my lap and not his.” London’s hand fisted at her side. Typical CJ-Alex move. They dropped this in her lap and then blamed her when it didn’t work out.
